Westmead Hospital - Urgent Temporary Closure of Ward B3A

ASMOF received correspondence yesterday from Westmead Hospital that there will be urgent temporary closure of Ward B3A effective from next Wednesday, 1st November 2017. Further, that it is expected that Ward B3A will need to be closed for about 8 months with a projected return to usual operations after 30 June 2018.

Westmead Hospital has also advised ASMOF that:

Staff have been informed of this development and the rationale behind the decision to close Ward B3A via a meeting held on Tuesday, 24th October 2017:

  1. Due to closure of the ward, there will be some redeployment or utilising excess leave will need to occur.
  2. Staff have been advised of procedures that will take place in order to have redeployment occur as seamlessly as possible as well as options for the taking of leave.
  3. Information has been provided to staff in relation to the expected timeframe that will be involved in resuming activity in the department and staff have been reassured of their ongoing employment status.
  4. Staff have also been offered access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
ASMOF understands that Westmead Hospital Ward 3BA is the Surgical Ward for Vascular, Plastics, Head & Neck, ENT, Maxillofacial and Dental.

With very limited information at hand, we have written to Westmead Hospital requesting further information regarding:
  • The rationale behind the temporary closure of Ward 3BA;
  • How many medical officers will be affected by this closure (if any);
  • Clarification as to whether medical officers will be part of the staff expected to utilise excess leave.

Significantly, that we expect to be part of the consultation process regarding the urgent temporary closure of Ward 3BA.

If possible, please direct your feedback or comments to Juliette Rex on julietter@asmof.org.au as soon as possible and no later than 12pm next Tuesday, 31st October 2017.
